I have a situation where Excel is saving my 'xlsx' files as a text file.

For example: if I open Excel and create a new workbook, throw some numbers in it (or even leave it blank) then hit 'save as' and choose "excel workbook" as the type, it still saves it as a text file.

I have confirmed in Options -> Save that "excel workbook" is the default save type.

Anyone know why this is happening?

Excel Facts

Format cells as currency
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+4 to format cells as currency. (Shift 4 is the $ sign).
Please disregard this question, I was able to resolve the issue.

For those who encounter this in the future, here are the steps to resolve:

Choose Start on your PC
Search Default Programs/Apps
Find Excel
Scroll through the list of Excel file types and make sure that xlsx (or whichever type you're having an issue with) are set to Excel rather than Notepad.

Problem solved.
