I need to create a test that will test new hires capabilities with excel. I know vlookups and pivot tables are essential, but beyond that I can't think of much. I use a lot of functions which I'm sure are not required for the job. Does anyone have a test or has gone through the process of creating one before?

Excel Facts

Add Bullets to Range
Select range. Press Ctrl+1. On Number tab, choose Custom. Type Alt+7 then space then @ sign (using 7 on numeric keypad)
the test I took covered alot of what you see in these forums. vlookups, sorting, filtering, different type of referencing (very important where to use the $), formatting cells, doing text to columns, charts, pivot tables, formatting rows and columns, find and replacing,if functions for sure, and if you are doing vlooking i strongly suggestion teaching/testing them on index, match instead of vlookup.

Thanks for the tips, I'll try to incorporate most of these functions. On another note, I think someone will be fine as long as they can get a vlookup/hlookup. Index & match is more powerful, but its used much less and I would be satisfied if a user knows their basic lookups. Do have a good example of how to test find and replace?

Within the test, if I'm looking for a user to use a pivot table to get to an answer, should I state to use pivot tables or let them figure it out from the data and the question presented? To me given the time constraints and the requirements it seems obvious a pivot table should be used, but I'm unsure.
