excel validation
Hi there..
I love the videos you produce..

I have been looking for an answer and as of yet have not found an answer.

Lets say you name a range, and then use that range for validation.

In the validation setup, I select list.. and then point it to my name range.

Great.. works fine..
however...

lets say I have an entry that says 6300-repairs.

If I have that in cell a1 for example and drag the handle by accident instead of copying it... it populates cell a2 with 6301-repairs.

The problem that is not in my list...so I would expect a warning.. but it happily auto fills. Is there a way to prevent the auto fill from bypassing the validation rules?

Not a big deal, but it can cause problems.. especially when sumif is looking at the columns... since 6300 will sum, and 6301 won't since it isn't in my list..

Any thoughts?

Thanks alot!
John

Excel Facts

Move date out one month or year
Use =EDATE(A2,1) for one month later. Use EDATE(A2,12) for one year later.
When you drag and drop, that will overwrite cells that have validation rules.

There is an option on the Options menu to turn off drag and drop.

Excel 2003 or earlier:
Tools\ Options| Edit Tab: Uncheck Allow cell drag and drop

Excel 2007 or later:
  • Click the Microsoft Office Button (upper left)
  • Click Excel Options.
  • Click Advanced.
  • Under Editing options, select or clear the Enable fill handle and cell drag-and-drop check box
