Excel - Word mailmerge filename problem

I am trying to do a mail merge in Word using an Excel spreadsheet.
When I attempt to open the Recipients List file it generates the wrong filename, so obviously I get a message saying Word can't find it.

eg when I navigate to C:\Users\me\Desktop\test.xlsx
Word morphs this into C:\Users\Gerd\Desktop.xlsx

I have tried to repair my Office Home and Student 2010 installation, but this "Stops working" after a short time, MS looks for a solution and fails to find one.

Excel Facts

How to change case of text in Excel?
Use =UPPER() for upper case, =LOWER() for lower case, and =PROPER() for proper case. PROPER won't capitalize second c in Mccartney
Sorry - made a typo in original.

I am having the same problem - I have tried creating brand new Word and Excel documents using 97-2003 format and because the file name is longer, I can't even see which document is correct in the drop-down list and it won't let me select a new data source. I'm completely stuck and cannot use mail merge at all now on my PC!
