Excel workbook probs

Hi all

I have a problem when opening to workbooks in excel.
I used to be open an excel workbook and then go to another spreadsheet on my desktop and open that and i would be able to create formulas etc between the two workbooks.
Now though this no longer works i now have to use the open icon in excel and then find the file which takes a long time when i have hundreds of files. Does anyone know how to fix this?
