Experiencing slow response time with simple macros

I am having trouble working in with a file because it takes a couple minutes to open/save and any edits to VBA coding taking up to a minute just to type and be recognized. Sometimes simple cell entries in excel cause lag. I'm running on a dell latitutde with 1.86 GHz, 504MB RAM.

The file is written in Excel 97 and is <2MB. I have been trying to work in the VBA coding with my default excel, 2002, but come across siginificant lag writing/running macros. I have now installed 2000, only to have simliar issues with lag. The file must remain in 97 since the end user will be operating 97. Do I have to intall 97 in order to easily work with the file?

Also, for my own curosity, what is causing this lag? I have disabled macros, set calculation to manual, and saved the file, yet it still takes a couple minutes. The macros are very simple, mostly hiding and unhiding rows/columns/worksheets. The file does have many "defined" cells, (e.g. 'InputName' etc.). Does this add the hang up?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Excel Facts

Round to nearest half hour?
Use =MROUND(A2,"0:30") to round to nearest half hour. Use =CEILING(A2,"0:30") to round to next half hour.
This link has some code that may help.

Also, some suggestions to keep file size down and reduce workbook slow-down.
Avoid the following:
Formats that extend over entire Columns, (65536 rows) or entire Rows, (256 columns).
Graphics, even if they are hidden.
Formulae that reference entire rows or columns.
Named ranges that are referenced from worksheets other than their own.
