If I have column G (1000 rows) with start dates, and column AT (also 1000 rows) with completion dates, but not all of column AT is complete, what formula do I use to show how many WORKING DAYS (ie 5 per week) the action took?

I presume it must begin with an IF statement as it hinges upon IF there is a date in column AT...?

Try

=IF(AT1="","",NETWORKDAYS(G1,AT1))

With Excel 2003 and earlier this requires the Analysis Toolpak (from Tools > Add-ins).
