Is there a way to extract the data series used to create a chart assuming one doesn't have the original data series that created it?

Thanks

Excel Facts

Select all contiguous cells
Pressing Ctrl+* (asterisk) will select the "current region" - all contiguous cells in all directions.
try this.you may succeed

activate(click) the chart
highlight the formula bar
hit F9
you will have the data bothe for x and y values.

do some preliminary expriments.

"it is created by excel"

Way it's created not the only issue - what is it now? for example, if someone copied an excel chart as a picture into word, it's not a chart any more, it's a picture, so no data. Have you tried the suggestion from venkat?

"but I'm also wondering if it were made in word or powerpoint if it could be pasted into excel and the data extracted"

Not that I'm aware of.

if you need more, please post back with the specifics of what you've got, not generic descriptions of the problem.

If it's a regular Excel chart, you can extract the data from a chart even if you don't have the worksheet it was linked to:

Macro to Extract Data from a Chart
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;137016

(use the Excel 97 version of the code).

In principlle, if it's an MSGraph chart made in PowerPoint or Word, you can still extract the data. Double click on the chart, switch to the datasheet, copy the data from the grid, and paste it into Excel.
