Extracting Data from Embedded Object

I have an embedded/linked object (one-dimensional table from Word) in my excel file. I was only able to get it dynamically linked as an object. What I want to do is to use the information (text in this case, but eventually values as well) in excel formulas but I can't seem to tie my formula to the object. Anyone done this? Thanks in advance for any ideas. VBA is ok but not preferred.
