File Location

I have linked some Excel files and on occasion when I go to manually update a link, the file that I want to link from is not located in a My Documents file (which is where I have saved it) but rather it is in a directory "ApplicationData\Microsoft\Excel". I need to change the source back to reference the file in My Documents in order to update. How does the reference to the ApplicationData directory occur and how do I prevent it?

in the settings for excel is a location where you can indicate the default path.
