File Name Question

I just received an Excel 2003 document that has the file extension ".xls:2." If I close that document, the original ".xls" file still shows. Basically, the same file opens twice with one click.

I've never seen the ".xls:2" format before. Does anyone know how I can get rid of this?

Thanks.

Edit: I just renamed the file and the :2 went away. I'm still curious as to how that got there in the first place. Again, the document is inherited.
