File size - is it based on #cells with values or complexity?

We have a workbook with 3 sheets, with about 1 million cells on each sheet containing values (about 11,000 rows, 90 columns).

The workbook is coming out at 50MB, which is a bit of a pain for sharing.

A lot of the cells have reasonably complex trigonometric calcs, such as:

So my question is: is the overall file size based solely on the number of cells populated (in which case I am surprised it is as high as 50MB) or the complexity of the calculations?

Any suggestions for potentially reducing the size would be appreciated, but I know without sharing the workbook here, that may be very difficult.

In older versions , I often had to click on the unused columns and rows
So left just the area the spreadsheet used
did this to all sheets and the size reduced considerably - that was version 2003 when i used to do a lot of spreadsheets for analysis work in a large corporation and share via sharepoint and other media
However, things may have change in 2016 / 365 versions
But just because the spreadsheet was say column A to Z and I clicked on AZ and did other things
By selecting AA and beyond , then deleting - that changed the size a lot.
