File size is too big to open. Boss is standing over my shoulder waiting....Help please????

Computer is:
Windows xp.
uses excel 2003.

The dastardly file:
(2007 excel file)


How do I open it so that I can copy the last 5 days of entry to start another file.

Yes, I told them they needed to start a new file three months ago.

What can I do now to minimize the damage and get this fixed?

Hi Kenneth.

Try this:

1) Copy the file in Windows Explorer in a different directory.
2) Rename your file (NewName.xls)

For a quick solution import it into MsAccess.
Create an extract exporting records whose date >= 3 months ago.

Yup. Way over my head on this one. I understand what you are saying. I just don't know how to do it.

Is there anyway I can email it to you? You sound like you could do it in about 4 seconds. I would love to know how to do it, though.

It says...."File conversion in progress"

If you mean me then follow these steps.
NB: I am refering to 2003 menu items from memory, so may not be exact.

Open MsAccess with a new blank database.
Click File => Import and navigate to your excel file.
Follow the on screen instructions.

This will crteate a new table, select that table
One of the menu items will be a query wizard, click that. You want to open it in design mode.
In the DATE criteria field enter your condition >=29/08/2011.
Run the query, this will create another table.
Select that table and export it, File => Export.

If you need to retain formula create a blank template from your existing file.
Import your access file into the new Excel template.

All done.
