File Size Issue

I have an Excel worksheet that has a data table on a hidden sheet. There is a front-end sheet that will retrieve data based on particular selections.
Now I have a bunch of If / Then formulas next to the data table (not really that big 2900 rows, 20 columns of data).
I was shocked to see that the file saved at 6MGs! I went in to see what could be causing the problem, pictures, controls...etc, but realized I had none. Then I went in and copied all 2800 rows worth of formulas and pasted special as values....the file dropped down to 1.5 MGs!
I'm not sure why 2800 rows of formulas would take up so much space as opposed to the actual values. Can someone explain why this is happening and even better, let me know if there is a way to reduce the size that the formulas take up???

Thank you, Paul

Did you know Excel offers Filter by Selection?
Add the AutoFilter icon to the Quick Access Toolbar. Select a cell containing Apple, click AutoFilter, and you will get all rows with Apple
Consider this:
1234.5 is a number, which can be represented with 4 bytes!
=IF(A1>5,B6,D7) is a formula, which may require as many as 15 bytes!
