Filtering Data (Downloaded as Text)

Greetings,
I have a significant number of rows of data, a column of which is either exclusively text or a mixture of numbers and text, that is download from another database as text. I wish to filter out and lump together 2 types of data that I can identify from the first 3 characters. One begins RE(and a space) the other is a number. The aim is to leave myself with 2 identifiers that I can pivot table out and sum the costs that can be found elsewhere in the sheet. I have got there using the following; first, to remove the first 3 characters
Code:
=LEFT(Q2,3)
Then, to convert the "RE " to a number
Code:
=IF(R2="RE ",1,"")
[/code)
Then, to multiply the text to convert the numbers from text to numbers
[code]
=IF(S2=1,1,R2*1)
I now have either a number or an error. I have singled out the errors and allocated the identifier "A"
Code:
=IFERROR(T2,"A")
The remainder can now be given the identifier "T"
Code:
=IF(U2="A","A","T")

This has taken 5 columns and seems to be an awful long way around a very small roundabout. I wonder if anyone could help me with a shorter route - if it is felt that I should be looking for one? Many thanks

Hi Glenn

Try this:
=IF(IFERROR(IF(IF(LEFT(Q2,3)="RE ",1,"")=1,1,LEFT(Q2,3)*1),"A")="A","A","T")

Many thanks everyone. The solution from Sweta works a treat, thank you very much. I also tried the other solution (Mikerickson) but that left me with 3 identifiers, "RE " as 1, the number as T and the remainder as A. Again many thanks
