how can I filter going down a column versus always doing rows?

Excel filters down the rows ONLY.
You can however Transpose the data to filter columns.

How would I do that?

Select the table of data in which you want to filter down a column.
Right click --> Copy.
Go to a new blank sheet.
Right click --> Paste Special.
Check "Transpose" --> OK.
Now use THIS table for your filtering needs. (As I understand it!)
