hey all.. I have a list of #'s starting from 1, and the next cell down adds 1 to that.. based on some other info, it will either add 1 or come out blank.. i want to be able to have cell A1 point out which is the last cell that has a number and is not blank.. does this make sense???

Here is the formula in this column..
In this sheet cell L284 has the same formula in it as cell L283, however because R283 is blank it also comes out blank...

Here is a copy of the sheet.. I want cell A1 to equal 282 in this example...

Excel Facts

Quick Sum
Select a range of cells. The total appears in bottom right of Excel screen. Right-click total to add Max, Min, Count, Average.
Hi slym34

Not sure I understan correctly but it seems you want the biggest value in column L:

=MAX(L:L)

Hope this helps

Hi, you can use MAX to show the largest number in column A.
In cell A1 = Max(L:L).

MAX works for the column L you showed. For completeness, to answer your stated quest of getting the last numeric cell in a range, a thorough discussion is here . Note that the comments are as important as the article itself.

The upshot: either use a simple UDF (tushar's recommendation), or longstanding quirk of VLOOKUP(...TRUE).

BTW, you really should use "" to return blank in a cell, rather than a space " "
