finding average, including empty cells and cells have text

Hi
I wanted to find the average of A1:A10. To my surprised when I changed A1 = test and deleted A3 and A7 content, the average remain the same.
Why is that? what is the value of empty cells? what is the value of cells which has text? these values should change the average? should not? thank you.
