Someone on this board gave me a beautiful formula to use to calcualte fiscal quarters for a project that I worked on in the past.

="FY"&YEAR(A2)+(MONTH(A2)>=11)&"--Q"&INT(1+MOD(MONTH(A2)-11,12)/3)

However, I have a project with a different company that their fiscal months starts on a Saturday - Friday cycle.

If possible, I would like to get a formula that autocalculates the fiscal Month and the fiscal quarter and obviously the fiscal year as well. Here are the dates:

Thanks Steve, but the formula that you have gives me one month after the "original date". So it doesn't exactly match w/the Saturday - Friday fiscal cycle. I would like to create a formula that autocalculates the dates and puts it in the right fiscal month, fiscal quarter, and fiscal year (so it may be 3 formulas? one for each requirement?)

thanks!

Unless there's a specific rule which dictates which months have 4 weeks and which have 5 then I think you'll need to use a lookup table, e.g. if the data from your first post is in A2:D13 (start date column is C2:C13) then you can lookup up a date in F2 with this formula to find the month

=LOOKUP(F2,C2:C13,B2:B13)

and to find the quarter similarly

=LOOKUP(F2,C2:C13,A2:A13)

If you have a larger table covering several years then you should have an extra column with the year so you can look that up too

Hi Barry,
I think the rule is the first 2 months of the quarter is 4 weeks each, and the 3rd month has 5 weeks.

Is there a simple formula that can calculate that?

thanks,
kim

Hi Barry,
Your formula works beautifully. However, if there's a way to create the formulas w/o a lookup table, it would save me from having to maintain the lookup table in various excel spreadsheets.

Appreciate your feedback and help!

thanks, kim

I think the rule is the first 2 months of the quarter is 4 weeks each, and the 3rd month has 5 weeks

Of course the problem with that is that it makes each year only 364 days (52 weeks) so because real years are either 365 or 366 days then you need an adjustment, e.g. approximately every 5 or 6 years one of the "months" has to have an extra week......otherwise in several years time your financial year will be starting in mid November rather than early December.

Having said that, assuming you have that consistent pattern from 4th December 2010 then you can use these formulas for fiscal month, fiscal quarter and fiscal year respectively

=TEXT((MATCH(MOD(A2-DATE(2010,12,4),364),{0,28,56,91,119,147,182,210,238,273,301,329})+11)*30,"mmmm")

="Q"&MOD(INT((A2-DATE(2010,12,4))/91),4)+1

="FY"&INT((A2-DATE(2010,12,4))/364)+2011

Assuming your date in A2

Hi Barry,
Also, how would you calculate the week number in a fiscal month using my table above? You gave a formula a while back to someone else's question (works brilliantly!) but it doesn't recognize my fiscal week starts on a Saturday - Friday cycle.

Using the below formula that you gave, 12/4/10 was week 1 but when I type in 12/5/10 the formula gave week number as 2 instead of keeping it as week 1.

R2 is the date column.

=INT((R3-WEEKDAY(R3)-DATE(YEAR(R3)-(MONTH(R3)<11),12,1))/7)+2

Barry,
You are a GENIUS! The fiscal month, quarters and years work beautifully. Question: any chance we can turn the month instead of a "text" to a value? So instead of saying "December" it shows Dec-11 or have it translate into 12/1/11?

thanks again!
