format font of horizontal axis categories in chart

I have a bar chart with labels for each bar on the horizontal axis. Some of these labels are chemical formulas. For example, one is methane (CH4). I want to format the "4" as a subscript. Any way to do this?

This can be done, but you have to fake the system and create a dummy series that acts like the xaxis labels.
