formatting lost after save and reopen

Hello all.

I recently opened a workbook, made many changes, saved with a new name, and when I reopened it, the formatting was gone...colors, lines backgrounds etc, though all the formulas are intact. This is a really large workbook with many tabs, and would take forever to reformat. Is there any way to get the original formatting back?

Also, is there a way to prevent this from happening in the future when I work on other workbooks?
