formatting text or memo fields

why would I use the less than(<) symbol when formatting a text or memo field.is it that
1it indicates that the field that follows the less than symbol has lesser value or weight than the preceding text or memo field?

If this is Access rather than Excel, then that would change the field's content to lower case.
