I am having a problem with my labor usage schedule. I have the total amount of hours multiplied by the average employee wage. That comes out fine, but when I try to divide that by projected sales, I get a number that doesn't make any sense. Can you help?

Excel Facts

Spell Check in Excel
Press F7 to start spell check in Excel. Be careful, by default, Excel does not check Capitalized Werds (whoops)
What do you mean a number that does not make sense?

What you will get is the amount paid to staff per dollar of sales which hopefully will be a small number if you want to make a profit.

Are you sure that is the result you want?

I'm sorry, I needed the percentage of labor usage toward projected sales. The number i keep coming up with is .22 instead of .37. This is what I have:
A B C
1 8:00 AM 5:00 PM 9:00
2 8:00 AM 5:00 PM 9:00
3 Total Hours 18:00 =sum(c1:c2)
4 Average empl. wage 7.01
5 Amount Paid 126:18 =sum(c3*7.01)
6 projected sales 1382.51
7 Labor % .05 =sum(c5/c6)
I need the .05 to be .09.

Hmm!

tricky one that, it all looks ok until you realise that excel is treating your 9:00 hours as a time and not a date.

replace the forumla in C1 with

=hour(b1)-hour(a1)

and in C2 with

=hour(b2)-hour(a2)

and see how that works

You'll need to convert the hours to a decimal (multiply by 24 and format the cell as a number) then multiply by the wages, then divide.
