I'm trying to get two files set up to use VLOOKUP to find matches. But, neither workbook will "accept" any kind of formula. When I write in the fomula and hit enter, the formula itself shows in the cell (it takes no action).

Automatic Calculation is on.

Both files are imported: one as XL, the other as text, converted to XL. I've also tried saving both files as XL, then trying the formula on the saved files without success.

What am I / have I done wrong?

P.S. Even a simple "if" formula doesn't get acted on.

How to change case of text in Excel?
Use =UPPER() for upper case, =LOWER() for lower case, and =PROPER() for proper case. PROPER won't capitalize second c in Mccartney
Your cells are formatted as Text.

Highlight the range, then do a Find/Replace all of the "=" sign with itself.

Sorry Jon, severe brain freeze here.
Target columns have been formatted as "numbers".
I don't understand the find/replace instruction. Please explain a bit more clearly : what am I finding and with what am I replacing it?

You'd do a File and Replace All on the equal sign symbol [=] replacing it with itself.

If the cell format was text, the replace should coerce it back to general.
