Formula displayed instead of result

I have having trouble getting the result of a formula to show in the cell. It displays the formula instead. I can sometimes get the result to show by clicking on the equals on the input line, but unreliably. I'm not sure what is causing this...

=SUMIF(A$2:A$101,"*month*ch*",B$2:B$101)-K34

It happens with these kinds of formulas.

Any ideas?

Can you sort left to right?
To sort left-to-right, use the Sort dialog box. Click Options. Choose "Sort left to right"
Yeah, that didn't work. Thanks for the shorcut though. I've also tried checking for spaces, formatting, calculation. I am running xl2000 with win2000.

Perhaps excel thinks it is entered as text.

What is the formatting of the cell?

If you delete the formula and enter it again from scratch seame problem?

If you enter the formula into a virgin cell what happens?

I got it, it seemed like the cells were stuck on text formatting. I had to delete them and redo it. I still had to hit the equals sign up top to get the result to show but it looks ok now.

Thanks.
