# Formula HELP!

I need to lookup or compare a list of names in Column A (always alphabetical) against a shorter list of names in Column C and if a name is found, I need the value in Column D placed in Column B. If the name in Column A is NOT found in Column C, then it needs to have some non-numerical result placed in Column B.

The following pic will help to explain. The yellow column B should be the results obtained. The 'n/a' can be any non-numeric character or characters.

### Excel Facts

VLOOKUP to Left?
Use =VLOOKUP(A2,CHOOSE({1,2},\$Z\$1:\$Z\$99,\$Y\$1:\$Y\$99),2,False) to lookup Y values to left of Z values.

this is fairly straightforward I think (unless you have any tricks up your sleeve Sue)

In B2 enter the following formula:

=IF(ISNA(VLOOKUP(A1,C:D,2,FALSE),"n/a",VLOOKUP(A1,C:D,2,FALSE))

and then copy the formula down Column B - that should do the trick.

One of:

=VLOOKUP(A2,\$C\$2:\$D\$8,2,0)

=IF(ISNUMBER(MATCH(A2,\$C\$2:\$C\$8,0)),VLOOKUP(A2,\$C\$2:\$D\$8,2,0),"n/a")
