Hi - column a of my worksheet contains a list of transactions. I need to place a formula in column D that numbers identical transactions - i.e when transaction X001 appears the first time column D will say 1, if it appears again then column D will say 2 and if it appears again column D will say 3 and so on - any ideas?

Thanks

Excel Facts

Repeat Last Command
Pressing F4 adds dollar signs when editing a formula. When not editing, F4 repeats last command.
Let's say that your data is in rows 2 to 100 and you are checking/counting the values in column A. Then in row 2, enter this formula:

=COUNTIF($A$2:A2,A2)
and copy down for all rows. This will give you your running counter.

Assuming your transaction number is actually in Col A, try this
Code:
=countif(a$1:a1,a1)
and copy down as far as required
