If cell A2 minus cell B2 does not equal zero, I need the formula in cell to return "A2" in cell C2 - ie the cell reference for the first part of the formula.

In Cell C2:
=If(A2-B2<>0,A2,"")

in case you want zero to be returned when the value is zero

=IF(A2-B2 <> 0, CELL("address",A2),0)

The cell value of A2 in the CELL funtion will be updated as you copy the formula around the worksheet.
