Hi all,

I have names in column A.
Column B is the result, I am looking for formula how to do it automatically. Name "Andrea" (cell A3) is first in alphabetical order, so number in cell B3 is 1. Then 2 for David etc. If name is duplicated, it must have the same value (like 5 for both cells with "Sylvia").

Excel Facts

Highlight Duplicates
Home, Conditional Formatting, Highlight Cells, Duplicate records, OK to add pink formatting to any duplicates in selected range.
How about
Excel Formula:
=COUNTIFS($A$2:$A$8,"<"&A2)+1

If you don't want to skip numbers use
Excel Formula:
=MATCH(A2,SORT(UNIQUE($A$2:$A$8)),0)
