Formula Subtracting

Noob Q,

Can i make a formula which performs the following

Column A minus Column B or C (whichever Is greater) = Column D

A B C D
5 6 2 -1
5 2 1 3
5 5 9 -4

Formula to perform this?

In D1 try:

=A1-MAX(B1:C1)

Then drag down for the rest of the rows

Try

=A1-MAX(B1,C1)

Try this

=if(b1>c1,a1-b1,a1-c1)
