needing a formula to sum up hours but not roll over into counting days ~ if total is 38:18 (38 hours, 18 minutes) i need it to say that, NOT 1:14:18 or 1 day, 14 hours, 18 min.

What did Pito Salas invent?
Pito Salas, working for Lotus, popularized what would become to be pivot tables. It was released as Lotus Improv in 1989.

i have a canned formula that looks like:

=(L9-L30)/(144/24)

to what does the 144 refer?

I don't know. Could it be a typo? There are 1440 minutes in day. So 1440/24 yields the number of minutes in an hour, 60.
