Hi,
I am trying to create a formula that will count the number of cells that begin with a certain phrase or have a certain phrase within the text. For example
count the number of cells that begin with "Contract exam requested, awaiting results from".

Excel Facts

Quick Sum
Select a range of cells. The total appears in bottom right of Excel screen. Right-click total to add Max, Min, Count, Average.
Maybe a formula like this if your list is in column A for example.

=COUNTIF(A:A,"Contract exam requested, awaiting results from*")

Note the wildcard asterisk after the word or phrase to note begin with. If you wanted to see if it exists anywhere, use enclosing asterisks, example:

=COUNTIF(A:A,"*Contract exam requested, awaiting results from*")

Try this...

=COUNTIF(A2:A10,"*Contract exam requested, awaiting results from*")
