What causes a formula to not update the result until you go into the formula cell and hit enter?

Excel Facts

Easy bullets in Excel
If you have a numeric keypad, press Alt+7 on numeric keypad to type a bullet in Excel.
Probably you have Manual Calculation switch on.

Try hit F9.

Also check in Tools > Options in Tab Calculations that Automatic is selected, in yours case probably it is Manual so you need to do it manualy by pressing F9. This is for office 2003, similar is for newer one (find Calculation Tab).
