Can anyone explain why this formula works:

=LOOKUP(REPT("z",255),A2:A10)

And the one below doesn't work?

=LOOKUP(REPT("z",255),A2:R2)

In advance, thanks!

Excel Facts

Why does 9 mean SUM in SUBTOTAL?
It is because Sum is the 9th alphabetically in Average, Count, CountA, Max, Min, Product, StDev.S, StDev.P, Sum, VAR.S, VAR.P.
In what sense does it not work ?

They both return a value for me, although I'm not sure what they are meant to do.

Hello Dathan,

Both formulas should extract the last text value from the range, see my explanation in your other thread here

What result do you get and why is that not "correct"? Perhaps you were expecting it to do something else?

Just taking a guess... maybe A2:R2 contains cell(s) towards the end that contain formulas that return "" resulting in your lookup formula returning "" and you are thinking that it is not returning anything?

Or perhaps A2:R2 only contains empty cells and/or numeric cells?

No, I'm actually just a moron.

I entered the formula in cell G1 but out of habit I set the range to A2:E2, so when I copied my formula down the results didn't match the spot checks for every row.

Sorry for confusion.

barry houdini, i am checking the explanations now, I'll follow up in that thread if I'm still confused. (highly likely )

Thanks (y)
