I am trying to put the following data in excel.
Lets say in my first column i need to show 1*3+4.
In my second column I need to show the answer to the above expression i.e. 7
Obviously I wsould like that the two are linked ina manner that, if I change 3 to say 5 my answer in the next column should change to 9. Hope you can help me.

Can Excel fill bagel flavors?
You can teach Excel a new custom list. Type the list in cells, File, Options, Advanced, Edit Custom Lists, Import, OK
Try putting your Data in separate cells then the formula in your Results cell would be =A1*B1+C1.You can change any data easily

Enter 1*3+4 as text in A1 (without a = before it).

In B1 enter:

=EVAL(A1)

EVAL is part of the morefunc.xll add-in, downloadable from:

Thanx

I did do that and it seems to work. The problem is that we have some old lotus 123 files and we are trying to get that into excel and ontinue to work in excel in future. In lotus the format is I mentioned in my mail. I was wondering if there is another way without splitting it into columns.

From the menu choose Tools, Options and on the Transition tab check Transition formuala entry. Then you will be able to enter your formula without the = sign and Excel will translate it.
