I need a formula that will calculate what the difference between two numbers is as a percentage of increase.

Yes! Type 1 in a cell. Hold down Ctrl while you drag the fill handle.
kind of know what you mean, but how about posting back with a worked out example...

Why not give an example to exclude any misunderstanding?

trying to calculate last years income versus this years income, want to show what percentage the increase is.
$13,716.68 YTD thru pp 13 2001
$19,141.05 YTD thru pp 13 2002
$5,424.37 difference
???? percent of increase
