Can anyone explain
- why does DATEDIF behave differently?
- can I fix it?
Thank you

I get a list of available functions as I type =SUM
Formula List.jpg

I then get further help
Formula Help.jpg

But neither of the above occurs with =DATEDIF

But the function is available and works as can be seen in column I in image below

The DATEDIF function computes the difference between two dates in a variety of different intervals, such number of years, months, or days.

This function is available in versions of Excel since at least version 5/95, but is documented in the help file only for Excel 2000.
It was probably included for compatibility with Lotus 1-2-3.

Thanks @sandy666 and @Dave Patton and @Peter_SSs

At least that explains what's going on
I suppose the only real mystery is why Microsoft has decided not to document this function in any other versions

I like this observation on the situation ....
"DATEDIF is treated as the drunk cousin of the Formula family. Excel knows it lives a happy and useful life, but will not speak of it in polite conversation"

DATEDIF is documented for all supported versions here but note the warning;
Warning: Excel provides the DATEDIF function in order to support older workbooks from Lotus 1-2-3. The DATEDIF function may calculate incorrect results under certain scenarios. Please see the known issues section of this article for further details.

thanks @Peter_SSs
- that is the reason there is no screen help

Microsoft provided DATEDIF for compatibility reasons but a workaroud is sometimes required in to make the function deliver accurate results
Hence why its existence is not broadcasted to the unwary
