I thought it would have been simple, but I am not having much luck.
Situation is as follows.
I have a list of company names in column A, sheet 1. The names are often several words long. In tab 2 of the workbook, I have another list of companies.
I want to construct a formula that will do this:
1. Look at the names in column A, sheet 1
2. Go to sheet 2, column A
3. If the first word of each row in column A (sheet 1) matches the first word of each row in column A (sheet 2) then give me the number in column B (sheet 2). If it doesn't match, then don't give me anything
Is that possible? I know there are IF, MATCH and INDEX functions, but I am not sure how to use them.
