Getting text to appear in an adjacent column

I have an IF formula in every cell. When the condition is TRUE it displays the text from another column. When the condition is FALSE it displays nothing.

I need the text to overwrite the adjacent cells but since there is a formula in the adjacent cell it truncates the text due to the narrow width of the columns (the columns need to be narrow).

Is there a shortcut key for strikethrough?
Ctrl+S is used for Save. Ctrl+5 is used for Strikethrough. Why Ctrl+5? When you use hashmarks to count |||| is 4, strike through to mean 5.
Does hiding the column with the formula in it help?

Right-click column header and choose Hide.

showing text

The spreadsheet in question is a gantt chart. The far left three columns have task, start date, and end date. The columns to the right represent days - one day per column. I am using conditional formatting to shade the cells according to the start & end dates. I have an IF formula in each cell to the right that says "If the date at the top of this column is equal to the start date the cell value is "task description"".

Therefore I don't think hiding the adjacent column will work - I want all the columns(days) represented whether or not they have a task occurring.

I understand now.

But, I am afraid I don't know that you can help that.

The only other thing I can suggest is that you try the shrink to fit option from the Alignment tab of the Format Cells dialogue.

Or you add a text box over the cells (but then you can't use formula to populate it).

Good luck
