Through VB, is there a way to go to a specific record in a specific field...i.e. go to the record where 'name' field is 'john smith'

Yes -- in a dynaset recordset you can use the Find method. This snippet from Access 97 Developer's Handbook:

strCriteria = "[LastName] = 'Smith'"
With rst
   .FindFirst strCriteria
   Do While Not .NoMatch
      'you've got a record, so do something:
      Debug.Print ![FirstName]
      .FindNext strCriteria
   Loop
End With
