handling duplication

I have an Excel (2003) spreadsheet where I have imported some payroll data into it from some Oracle tables. I'm looking for a way (vba or excel forumals) to remove duplicate sick leave dollars for each employee id. In other words, I might have the same dollar amount and the same week ending date in two different rows. I want to keep both rows but keep only the top sick leave amount if there is any sick leave. I tried to manage this from within Oracle before the import but didn't have any luck with the way my data source was built. Any help/direction would be really appreciated. Here is a sample excerpt.

Thank you all for your responses. I wasn't able to get the two macro suggestions to work. No error or anything happened on either one. I'm sure it was something I was missing, not completely understanding the mechanics of the macros. The test data I was using for the macros was as follows: And my goal after running the macros was to have only the first $116.20 sick leave displayed on the report. The columns in my real data reside in Column B (laborcode), column P (week ending), & column Q (sick leave) and the data begins on row 6.

The suggestion by Ian to use a formula in the spreadsheet works good though I was hoping not to have to add another column to hold the formula. I may just have to do that though and hide it or something. Thank you Ian.

It is not too surprising that the earlier codes did not work. If you post three columns of data without any further information about which columns they are, most helpers will, not surprisingly, assume they are columns A:C (or at least 3 cosecutive columns as Ian did).

I'm assuming that if the Laborcode and Week Ending are the same then any Sick Leave will also be the same. For example, for Laborcode 239303 and WE date of 16 May 2010 you wouldn't have, say 116.20 in the first two rows and 125.00 in the third row.

If my assumption is correct then try this.

Again, thank you Peter for your response. Its clear to me now, in my effort to make my problem scenerio simple, I didn't provide enough pertinent information. Your assumption "that if the Laborcode and Week Ending are the same....." was correct and your solution, for the most part, is working well. I'm very grateful for your help. What I'm trying to do now is to change all the null values to zero values (an afterthought). So, I tried altering your code line to e(i, 1) = 0, and this worked except it put zeros in rows 2,3,4 of my sick leave column (Q). Thinking this was due to your d = Range("B1:P" & LR).Value and With Range("Q1:Q" & LR), I tried changing the B1 to B6 (my data row always starts on row 6) and the Q1 to Q6. But the For statement didn't like it and I didn't understand the mechanics of it enough to alter it. (The If statements are what confused me). So then I tried multiplying my sick leave column (after running your code without any modifications to it) by 1, doing a copy/paste special with the Multiply operator. That changed all the null values to 0 but left other undesirable results as often happens with workarounds. Any further help would be very much appreciated. And if you have a few spare moments...I'd love some explanation of your solution, especially the For statement.


Here's a summary again of my worksheet.
-Headings - rows 1 through 5
-Data always starts on row 6
-Data is dynamic
-Columns that are involved are B (laborcode), P (week ending), and Q (sick leave). Column A is the employee name and other columns in between and after Q are labor info.

First thing is that it is good that you have tried some modifications yourself. Good way to learn. :)

If you don't already know, a good way to get an idea of what the code does, and how, is to step through the code a line at a time with F8. After each line has executed you can look at your sheet to see what the code has done (if anything) and/or hover your cursor over any of the variables in the code to see what values they are currently holding.

Anyway, try the code below. I've just made 3 changes (the commented lines) one of which is the 'vbNullString' to '0' change you had already made. The other 2 changes are just to get the code started a few rows lower because of your multiple heading rows. If it doesn't do exactly what you want, at least I think it should be closer.

I'm not sure about your comment that the data being dynamic. Does that have a bearing on what the code has to do or how it is triggered?

I will give your suggestions about stepping through the code a try in the morning. What I meant by dynamic data is the data rows can increase/decrease with each import into Excel. I tried a couple data imports to test your first solution and they seemed to work with both. I'll look at your modifications and let you know so we can label this thread a success. Thank you again for your help.

Then that should be no problem. The line below finds the last row each time the code is run by starting at the very bottom of the sheet (row 65,536 for Excel 2003) in column B and going upwards until some data is found.
