Heat mapping in Excel

Is there a way to get cell color formatted according to the value in the cell? I have about 900 different intensity values I would like to have represented as gray scale. Obviously, conditional formatting does not provide enough flexibility for me to get this kind of gradual change.

Actually, if you do a search for it, there have been posts for using VBA to have more than 3 conditions for conditional formatting.

Though I'm not sure how well it would work considering the amount you have...
