# Help Finding Max Value for Multiple Columns

I'm using Excel 2002. I'm trying to apply a conditional format to highlight the cell with the highest value from multiple columns and rows. So far I've not had any luck. Please help. Thank you.

How can you turn a range sideways?
Copy the range. Select a blank cell. Right-click, Paste Special, then choose Transpose.

Use the formula

=A1=MAX(\$A\$1:\$A\$5)

in your condition. Change the ranges to suit (A1 is the active cell).

I've tried that previously and it's not working. The data I have is in 3 columns and multiple rows. I'm trying to find the highest value of the 3 columns.

#### Richard Schollar

=MAX(\$A:\$C)

will return the highest value from the 3 columns.

You've put that formula in a condition in a range where cell A1 is the active cell, and it doesn't highlight the cell(s) with the maximum value? If so, there must be something else going on, since that works (and Richard followed up with the syntax for evaluating the entire columns).

Are you sure your "values" are numbers?

Can we know what it was? (It helps to understand how other people use Excel).

Thanks, and glad you found a solution.

I didn't put the last row number in at the end of the formula.
