Help merging data from two separate worksheets

Hi,
Can somebody help me out with some advice? I've pasted in some examples below to help explain the problem.

I want to put the figures from Worksheet 1 into the relevant cells in the 'figures' column of Worksheet 2.

I've used Excel a bit but would appreciate it if you could outline the basic steps for any advice.

The worksheets are part of far larger spreadsheets - I would usually try and use a formula like VLOOKUP to move the data around, but can't think of anything to make this work.

Excel Facts

What is the fastest way to copy a formula?
If A2:A50000 contain data. Enter a formula in B2. Select B2. Double-click the Fill Handle and Excel will shoot the formula down to B50000.

For simplicity, let's assume the following...

1) A1:F3 contains the source data.

2) H1:J9 contains the results.

3) The first three characters of the countrycode (ie BLZ1970) represents the country code, and the last four characters represents the year.

Then, try...

J2, copied down:

=INDEX($C$2:$F$3,MATCH(LEFT(I2,3),$B$2:$B$3,0),MATCH(RIGHT(I2,4)+0,$C$1:$F$1,0))
