Help using wildcards in VLOOKUP

Hi

I am trying to use wildcards in the table array of a vlookup but I am not having success. Is this possible? I want do the following:

Lookup value: 45123

Table:

Col 1 Col 2
??123 56
??124 57

So... I would want my vlookup to search for 45123, and I would think that ??123 would be a match, since ?? is the wildcard, and then return 56. Am I not understanding how wildcards are used? Can this not be done?

Hi,

Unfortunately wildcards do not work that way around. If you wanted to find a number that contained 45123 then the use of wildcards would work.

In your case your looking for a partial match.

If you want the lowest value that matches your number try:

=INDEX(B3:B5,MATCH(MIN(ABS(A3:A5-B1)),ABS(A3:A5-B1),0))

If you want the highest value that matches your number try:

=INDEX(B3:B5,MATCH(MAX(ABS(A3:A5-B1)),ABS(A3:A5-B1),0))

Entered as an array ctrl+shift+enter

You could do a match on the last 3 characters if that's what you're trying to do.

This array formula** entered in E3:

=INDEX(B2:B6,MATCH(TRUE, ISNUMBER(SEARCH(RIGHT(D3,3),A2:A6)),0))

** array formulas need to be entered using the key combination of CTRL,SHIFT,ENTER (not just ENTER). Hold down both the CTRL key and the SHIFT key then hit ENTER.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately it does not entirely solve my problem. To expand on what I am trying to accomplish, here is some more explanation.

I have a table that is organized by priority and it may have more that one entry that would match the input. For instance,

Col 1 Col 2
45124 45
??123 46
45125 47
45123 48
45?34 49

Now, if the user enters 45123, I want 46 to be returned, even though 45123 is present later in the table with a value of 48. I want the earliest instance of a match to be returned.

Similarly, if the user inputs 45934, I want 49 to be returned, because it matches the 45*34 line.

I was hoping that with some intuition this could be accomplished without so much complexity that it becomes counter productive. But I just haven't been able to figure it out yet.

I think you're going to need a really smart person to come up a VBA user defined function to accomplish this.

I wrote something but as I'm at home now I can't post it.

I had some questions.

- Will they always be 5 digit number?

- On similar matches what takes priority?

e.g.

looking for 12345 in

1234?
123?5
12?45
1?345
?2345

all of these match 4 out of the 5 characters but not the same character.

Could you rank them in order and give the reason.

F2, control+shift+enter, not just enter, and copy down:

E2:E4 houses the target strings to look up (evaluate).

F2, control+shift+enter, not just enter, and copy down:

This seems to work! Do you think you could share how this works? The part I'm a little confused by is the Match/Search part.

Also, could I build in an argument so that if no match at all is found, it returns a "not found"?
