I have a list of names from a database. There are duplicate records so the names are exactly the same. However, when I goto advanced filters and try to filter unique, it does ot filter out the duplicate names. Any help?

Lock one reference in a formula
Need 1 part of a formula to always point to the same range? use $ signs: $V$2:$Z$99 will always point to V2:Z99, even after copying
I would suggest they are not *exact* duplicates. There may be extra spaces, or leading or trailing spaces that you can't see. If this is not the case, describe precisely the steps you are taking and we'll take it from there.

I even tried it on a test list. On the test list go in and create a column named "Names". Then under that list type in a bunch of names with a couple that autofill finishes to ensure you have an exact duplicate.

Then I went in and went to filters: advanced filters: selected teh unique box and copied to another location or copy over self does not matter. It did not get rid of the duplicates in the list.

I am using Excel 97. Thank you for any help.

I figured out what we were doing wrong. we were not choosing a criteria range. Ticks me off when I miss little things like that. Thank you for your help.
