HI all, I have a cell that has descriptions in it and item number the info looks like this:

7999 - 1/8" wrench with spool
88888 - thread for widgets

I would like to set up a column with just the item # and another with just the description that comes after the "-" so it would look like this

Column 1 Column 2
7999 1/8" wrench with spool
88888 thread for widgets

Is there a formula to accomplish this?

Thanks

Excel Facts

What is the last column in Excel?
Excel columns run from A to Z, AA to AZ, AAA to XFD. The last column is XFD.
Hi aberfoyle

If the decription is in A1 try

in B1:

=LEFT(A1,FIND("-",A1)-1)

in C1:

=RIGHT(A1,LEN(A1)-FIND("-",A1)-1)

Just use text to columns to divide the data.

1. Select data....Text to Columns
2. In the wizard select "delimited" and next
3. select other as the delimited and type in - in the box beside it and press finish.
