Hi,

I have an intern that is working with me, and I have a file that I need updated but one of the columns has confidential information so I would like to just hide & password protect this column this way he can't access/view this information but still have access to modify the rest of the spreadsheet.

Is there a way to do this in Excel 2007?

Thank you,

Excel Facts

How to find 2nd largest value in a column?
MAX finds the largest value. =LARGE(A:A,2) will find the second largest. =SMALL(A:A,3) will find the third smallest
If he's clever (and cares enough), he'll be able to get around it. Excel protection is minimal. Bottom line, don't give away confidential if you don't trust them!

Another solution would be to give him the file, but replace the confidential info with a key: Ex.

Name|Accout#|Balance
John|123456| $1000
Sally|234567|$2000

Change to
John|a|$1000
Sally|b|$2000

Then have a Key for your own file to plug back in when he's done:
a|123456
b|234567
c|...

Its actually pretty darn easy to see information in hidden columns.
Let's say that you have confidential information in cell A1, and have managed to successfully hide that column with a Protected Password. All they have to do is go to any other column and type in:
=A1
and they can pull the information from that cell.

Most protection in Excel is designed to protect the data from being changed, not viewed. Here is a Microsoft link on protection, if you are interested: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/e...rksheet-or-workbook-elements-HP010078580.aspx
