Hiding cell formatting through VBA in Excel

Background: I have an Excel sheet with a picture as a background that is part of our graphical standard that I can’t change. I’m developing a smaller set of cells on one sheet that should be switched on or off depending on which tick-boxes are set. The cells I want to hide are in such a position that I can’t remove whole rows or columns.

The problem: The formatting makes the cells stand out from the background so even if I remove the values from the cells I can’t make them disappear entirely. I could make one sheet for every possible combination of ticked boxes but the numbers add up quickly. Hiding or removing the cells + formatting through VBA scripts seems like a plausible idea but I can’t find information on how to hide cells and removing things and rebuilding them takes a lot more code and doesn’t look good on slower machines. Do you have any ideas of how to work this out?

I'm grateful for any advice,
Daniel
