How do I create a drop down list like Autofilter does

I have a column of dates that I would to appear as a drop down list in a similar manner to that produced by AutoFilter. I don't want a whole row of filter buttons. I only want to do this with the 1 column containing the list of dates.
 

Excel Facts

Will the fill handle fill 1, 2, 3?
Yes! Type 1 in a cell. Hold down Ctrl while you drag the fill handle.
2 ways:

Data/ validation/ List OR

rIGHT click in an empty cell and Pick from list
